by Open A Bar 2 Ranch on January 21, 2011

The Open A Bar 2 Ranch has a few new things in store for the new year!  You can see what we’ve been up to lately by reading our latest newsletter.

One thing we are really excited about is our newly added all-natural Flat Iron Steaks, beef jerky and beef sticks.  We are especially excited about the fact that our jerky and beef sticks do not contain any sodium nitrates or MSG.

Winter Farmers’ Market this Saturday

by Monique on January 21, 2011

There will be four new vendors in attendance at the Farmers’ Market this Saturday at the Scottsbluff Hampton Inn & Suites, 1-4 p.m.

Couple updates from Kathi:

We have a new vendor joining us for the market this Saturday, Bob and Sallie Fisher of “Just Your Way” who specialize in gluten-free cooking. They plan on bringing a variety of gluten-free baked goods, pasta salads, meatballs and mixes.

…This just in from Beth Everett, she is planning on bringing squash, cabbage, carrots, beets, garlic, rutabaga and other vegetables and a free Turtle Tree Seed catalogs…

I’m looking forward to a great market!

News from FlowerField Farm

by Monique on December 17, 2010

I was so excited to get updated info from the folks at FlowerField Farm.  A lot of exciting possibilities for next year!

FlowerField Farm is Growing! We will be expanding from one to two small farms in Banner County, NE. Rylee and Nathaniel remain at the McGowan family farm, while Rylee’s mother Joy and brothers Noah and Kadan will be growing more produce on their 40a farm a little further south. We are striving to become more sustainable by adapting permaculture practices and working on Organic certification and green energy.

Joy and Kadan definately have the green thumbs in the family, so they will be expanding the vegetable side of the farm, especially with fresh mushrooms and heirloom tomatos. Noah is one of the first members to join Banner County’s FFA chapter, and he will be caring for bees and possibly a few steers for this years project. They will also be offering Joy’s artisan french bread and cinnamon rolls at the Farmers Market, as they were a big hit in 2010!

Nathaniel and Rylee are in the process of planning a ‘micro-dairy’ to make organic raw milk aged cheeses, and are considering the possibility of offering quarts of bottled pasturized Grade-A cream line milk to customers at the farmers market. We are in the marketing research phase of this project right now, and will be offering a survey for potential customers to complete.

We are planting a ‘micro-orchard’ around the milk cow pasture, which will include apple, peach, pear, and plum trees. We are also adding 25 hives of bees this spring, some in the orchard and some in the fields. We will be planting numerous varieties of flowers to feed the bees, and will have cut flowers available at the market. Once the orchard starts producing, we will offer fresh fruit at the farmers market, and jams and jellies sweetened only with honey at the winter market. In 2012 we will begin raising 50 turkeys that will be pasture raised in the orchard and ready to harvest in the fall. We will be planting a large garden for home use, and and surplus will be sold at the market as well.

Kate Gies Open House this weekend.

by Monique on December 9, 2010

For a special and unique Christmas gift, I highly recommend Kate Gies’ handmade jewelry.  She will be having an open house this Friday and Saturday (10th and 11th) at Adorn in Torrington.  I have a necklace and bracelet she made and I just love them!  One of a kind handmade glass.

Check out her Prairie Bloom listing for links to websites displaying some of her work: http://prairiebloom.com/jewelry/

Thanks everyone who has taken the time to provide me with some feedback. :)

I have twenty responses so far and will leave the surveys up until Sunday.

I appreciate your input. It has already helped me to determine some ways I can make meaningful changes.
